Biomass Agronomy Guides and Videos on OBPC Website
As a first deliverable ofna 2-year KTT initiative (Knowledge Translation & Transfer)nthe project team has released agronomy guides for switchgrass and miscanthusnproduction. These documents can be accessed on the OBPC website. The agronomy guides arencomprehensive resources for existing and future biomass producers. The agronomynguides provide practical answers and solutions to newcomers of Ag biomassnproduction as well as to very advanced growers. The guides are the results

"WITCHGRASS” SWITCHGRASS FACTS:"
“WITCHGRASS” SWITCHGRASS FACTS:” Switchgrassn is one of many “energy crops”—plants that can be grown specifically to ben harvested and converted into biofuel at a biorefinery. Switchgrassn thrives in many different soil types and land conditions, reduces soiln erosion, is good at fixing nitrogen into the soil, and can grow with lessn water, fertilizers, and pesticides than many crops. Planting switchgrass on then margins of croplands reduces soil ero

Competitors have a head start transitioning to the bioeconomy
Around the world we can witness all sorts of bioeconomy related activities, events and products. Canada with its vast potential has to make major efforts to catch up and become a significant player of this exceptional business opportunity instead of being simply relegated to “bioproduct consumers”. With our climate change mitigation efforts bioproducts need to become a significant part of the solution. Read the following article in the Canadian Biomass magazine: Article in C

Excessive fertilizer use could reduce climate benefit of cellulosic biofuels
Switchgrass can be productive with relatively little fertilizing, compared to other crops. Research in Michigan demonstrates that excessive nitrogen rates could negatively offset the environmental benefits of switchgrass production. Read article in MSU Today

Study: Second-generation biofuels can reduce emissions
Second-generation biofuels are much cleaner than corn ethanol thanks to a number of biological characteristics, said DeLucia, a professor of plant biology at the U of I. In a 2011 study, DeLucia used a model to show what would happen if the land being used to grow corn for ethanol production was instead converted to Miscanthus and switchgrass. “Our results were staggering,” DeLucia said. “Since both of those plants are perennial, you don’t till every year, so you release less
